Overview Opower teamed up with Honeywell to create web and mobile apps that remotely controlled Honeywell's latest line of WiFi connected theremostats. Unlike competitive products, the Opower apps were designed to encourage users to establish a schedule (most thermostats are never scheduled), set efficient temperatures (at the cost of sacrificing comfort), and connect the customer with their utility to unlock even more potential savings through related efficiency programs (traditionally hard to participate such as Demand Response).

All of this came at no cost to the customer, as the utility provided the thermostat and apps free as an incentive to join various energy efficiency programs, such as Demand Response.
When a user adjusts to a more efficient temperature than their program, they are prompted (and loss aversion is applied to nudge them) to save the new temperature as their program.
